Graduation invitations rant

May 27th, 2009 at 01:43 am

Ok, I know every year family members and friends who have children that are going to be graduating and I plan for that. What had gotten me this year is neighbors who we have a ok relationship with but not the kind I would expect it to be to get a graduation announcement. But now that we did get one, it's another $30.00 and a card. I'm happy for their child but really! What would you do?

i probably would decline the invitation and just mention i had something else on. if you are not really that close to them i don't think they would mind. i kind of think those things are for close friends and family myself

I would give something appropriate to the relationship. If it is a very casual one, I would not spend $30. A photo album or picture frame can be a nice grad gift for much less than $30.

Just send a congratulations card. Maybe stick $10 in it, or a $10 Starbucks card, but if you're strapped for cash, just give the greeting card.

I think $30 is too much for people you don't know well.
I have cousins whose kids I haven't seen in years, and I'm thinking $20 has got to be enough, especially if you're not going to the party.

Hmmm. I got a graduation card for a close friend's son. On the phone, she mentioned "oh, if you want to go to graduation I have tickets". I really didn't want to go so the lack of an invitation in the announcement or the belated verbal invitation was no big deal. But I was going to limit it to $25, and this is someone I know well. I agree that a more economical but nice gift would be appropriate, if you feel obligated to give at all. Invitations to events for people you barely know annoy me, because they seem like obviously ploys to get money! (Absolutely NOT talking about my friend here, just your situation.)
