Suicide because of debt

August 11th, 2007 at 02:47 pm

A call from sil two days ago and brother is dead. He shot himself in the garage of his home. He left behind a loving wife, 10 year old step daughter that was crazy about him, two 20 something daughters and three precious granddaughters. You may wonder how this belongs on a financial website.

He had recently lost his job and like many of us on this board was in debt for things and could not see a way out. Even with the support of his wife it was going to take selling many of the things that were important to a certain lifestyle. We are only talking about the middle class keeping up with the Joneses' but nevertheless it was due to feeling that he had to maintain a certain lifestyle or his brothers and mom might consider him a failure. While this is not how we would have felt at all that was his feeling. He will be missed by everyone who life he touched. He was not a old man by any means but going to be 50 on his next birthday.

How this as opened my eyes. After we return from the memorial we will be selling everything that we can - items of extravance, diamond rings, big screen tv's, home three times the size of what we need for two people. I cannot let his death be without any meaning and neither can my dh. Perhaps not the best reason to downsize but finally the slap in the face we need to make some serious changes.

Any one who reads this that may be having the same feelings of hopelessness that he did, please talk it over with some one. Your loved ones will not be
better off without you.

Make some serious changes now. Don't live to impress anyone.

Please say a prayer for our family as we try to heal.

So sorry to hear about your loss. I have also read of other similar stories and saw a few on tv. Although many people end up there due to their own choices, many are there due to medical bills or the like. I fully believe that debt is the next form of slavery to grip society.

Such sad news; my condolences to you all. I suspect this kind of thing happens more than we know. What power money seems to have over us sometimes.

(wipes away tears)Heart breaking stories like this convince me more than ever to keep urging everyone to get out of debt asap. No amount of material possessions is worth this price.

I am sorry for your loss. I am even sorrier for his wife and step-child, left alone to deal with the mess he couldn't face any longer. I hope they have a strong support system. Those of us left behind after suicide need a strong support system.

  17. Broken Arrow Says:

Wow, how very terrible. I feel even worse for his children, especially the 10 year old who was crazy about him.

I'm not suicidal, but I do know the feeling of financial desperation. That's why I am the way I am today as well, trying to sell everything and live a simple, manageable life.

Yes, let's not let his death be in vain. Let us all remember him by becoming financially well.

  25. nance Says:

I am so sorry to hear about your brother. It is such a tragedy, and leaves such a heartbreaking situation for his family to deal with.
I have had two family members die in that manner, and you never get over the disbelief that someone could be that desperate, and not see a way out. He had to have been suffering from clinical depression. If so, nothing you or his wife and kids could have said to him would have helped.
Prayers go out to you and the family.

  26. Credit Cards Says:

Dang thats all I have to say! I quote carol...

Amen Carol...I own a credit card site and this is the last thing that you want to find out about. On my site I have articles to teach people the importance of debt and how to find the best credit cards for your needs. If you have a lot of debt I always suggest trying to balance transfer your debt. It can significantly lower you bills and it doesn't look bad on your credit. I still believe that credit cards and business loans are very important in todays world, but you are right "No amount of material possessions is worth this price."!

  27. JanH Says:

I've just now read your entry. I am so very sorry about the loss of your brother. My prayers go out to you, your family, and his. I have a friend who lost a son this way. She wore a red dress to the visitation saying she wanted to celebrate his life and what he meant to her. Thank you for sharing your pain. Maybe it will help someone see the pain loved ones feel. And they will get help for their debts instead. It is a powerful message that debt causes so much hurt. Take care of yourself.

  28. Thrifty Ray Says:

I am so sorry. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary situation...and one that affects so many for the rest of their lives. I am so very sorry.

  29. Nanaki Says:

I'm going to die soon. Maybe I'll see your brother.

  30. Amber Says:

Nanaki, that's terrible please don't say things like that. If you need help that is what we're here for

I have recently felt feelings just like that older man, only I'm very young, I'm 19. I have a family that loves me but my brothers and sisters are prototype kids and Im the only one struggling with money. Im in debt with a credit card and in the bank. Total I'm only in debt about 500.00, I know I have alot of time to fix it, but things only seem to be going down hill. I'm a faithful Christian so if anyone seems fit to pray that I can have more control of my life and financial status please do. Today I thought about driving my truck off the road, hoping that I could hurt myself for the situation I've put myself in. Thing is, I'm not this type of person. I've always been very positive and helpful to others, now I just need someone to return the favor I guess. Thanks to everyone that reads this, any bit of confidence or positive replies to this could help right now.

  32. Joe Says:

The belief that people are more important than money is a complete fantasy. Society at large does not care who commits suicide; they just want their money.
